Peter Mackie
Academy Director

Peter Mackie is no stranger to the Kitchener-Waterloo Region and surrounding communities. Mackie has over 30 years of professional playing and coaching experience.

Playing

The Scottish born, Guelph native and Wilfrid Laurier University graduate had an illustrious varsity career as a Golden Hawk with 2 OUA titles, 1 National Final appearance and was capped off with 3 OUA All-Star and 3 CIS All-Canadian awards.

Peter was extremely fortunate to spend a year in England prior to joining Wilfrid Laurier University participating in Reserve Squad training and matches for Chelsea FC, Manchester City FC, Rochdale FC and Motherwell FC.

This playing experience in the UK was instrumental in Peter’s overall growth as a young player. He arrived back in Canada and immediately had an invite to the Ottawa Pioneers training camp in Ottawa. Mackie had an outstanding training camp at Carleton University and was offered his first professional contract in 1989 from Head Coach Bill Thomson. The doors opened up for Peter to play in Canada’s first and only coast to coast professional league. The original Canadian Soccer League was a Division 1 professional league that operated in 6 provinces from coast to coast from 1987-1992.

Mackie remembers these days fondly and is honoured to have had the opportunity to travel across Canada and be a part of such reputable teams in Canadian Soccer folklore as the Ottawa Pioneers, Ottawa Intrepid, Kitchener Spirit and Kitchener Kickers. The original Canadian Soccer League was the breeding ground for identifying, developing and producing Canada’s young national team players.

Coaching

Kitchener Minor Soccer Club provided the opportunity for Peter to learn, grow and develop as a young coach.  Mackie worked with multiple rep programs over a 20 year span as a volunteer Head Coach, with provincial and National recognition for several of his former local players. The University of Waterloo Athletic department took notice and hired Peter in 2001 for the Mens Varsity team. In 2003, Mackie took over the women’s varsity program in which he held both posts for 10 years.

Mackie was very fortunate to take over a talented and motivated program. As a result, the early years were dream seasons at the University of Waterloo.

The 2001-2003 seasons were highlighted with two CIS National appearances, 1 OUA Championship, 2 OUA Finals and an OUA Coach of the Year award.

In 2009, Waterloo Minor Soccer Club reached out and hired Mackie as a Part-Time Coach Mentor before accepting a role as the first full-time Club Coach in 2012 at WMSC.

After 16 years at the University of Waterloo, Mackie resigned, seeking a new challenge within the college game.

In the Fall of 2017, Peter accepted the Head Coach position for both varsity soccer programs at Conestoga College. In his first year at the helm, Peter led the Women Condor’s to the playoffs culminating in the OCAA Central Division Coach of the Year Award.
